I came across an interesting phrase, "putting out a fleece" while reading two books Good Morning Holy Spirit and Close Encounters with the New Age. It means putting out a test to confirm God's will and has its roots in the Bible based on what Gideon did to confirm if God was the one sending him to lead an army to save Israel. Though both authors are respected pastors and men of God, I found out that it's more of an exception than a rule as putting God to the test is forbidden and would most likely irritate the one you're asking.
