I just had an epiphany. Or it maybe just a big duh moment. Anyhow, I just realized the parallel in the basic plot between the story of Tristan and Isolde and the first Shrek movie when I read this from the reference site, Behind the Name:
In Celtic legend Tristan was sent to Ireland in order to fetch Isolde, who was to be the bride of King Mark of Cornwall. Instead, Tristan and Isolde end up falling in love.
You just switch the roles between Tristan and Shrek, Isolde and Fiona, and King Mark and Lord Farquaad and there you go.

...Duh!
