Resumption of the West Side strips continue after a 2 year hiatus. Woohoooo! This is the short version of the original which was done in a two-part extended version to celebrate the come back, (you could see by clicking the image). I aiming to post one strip a week so I could stick to a schedule and keep on churning strips on a regular basis. Then as soon as I get back on the groove I'll go to posting twice a week and dare I say, three times a week. O ha?! O ha?! In the meantime I'll be posting random bonus strips online which didn't come out in the paper when the mood strikes. Anyhoo, I hope you guys like this one for the new year!

This is the first of a series of full page comics expanding on the ideas that previously came out in strip format. Six years ago this week the title made its debut in the pages of Philippine News (Oct. 9-15, 2002 issue) making it the first comic strip, I think, in the history of the paper. It's Olympics time again and although I'm not a big fan of these events I thought it would be great to do a high school intrams storyline for the month. I don't know if they still hold these things today (I heard one school scrapped all athletic activities during recess and lunch so their students wouldn't catch a cold inside their airconditioned rooms, and I was, like, what the heck?!) one thing's for certain: any activity that disrupts the humdrum of academic studies once in a while is certainly fun and I wish I could turn everything back to experience what it's like to be in high school again.

This is the last of the school opening series for this month and tied up with the news about the typhoon a week ago. Although it happened during the weekend, students at least had the consolation of having classes in all levels in the metro cancelled so those in charge can assess the damages and prevent further injuries from whatever debris is left around the campus. By the way, this is the unedited strip submitted to the paper and it may or may not be changed to suit my funny bones later when it's colorized later in my DA page.

There are a lot of things I would like to change with this strip I submitted to the paper, particularly panels 2 and 4. I would definitely do an overhaul of those two. I was set to do the strip earlier in the evening and the problem started when I suddenly realized I didn't do any research whatsoever on how to play Wii.
From the top of head I could somehow picture Wii players doing all sorts of poses as they engage in all sorts of games requiring whole body movement but of course I couldn't properly translate it on paper without any reference. Fast forward much later in the evening and early in the morning when I already got the poses down pat (which wasn't really any different from playing other game consoles) that I was struggling with the words. I forgot to write everything that came to mind. The brilliant and witty banter was totally lost. I finished everything past three in the morning tired and sleepy from the work that you see above. Gaaaahhh!

I'm still having trouble editing the dialogue on these original strips I submit to the paper. There's also the problem of editing the illustrations inside each panel, like for this particular strip I think I drew and redrew the 2nd panel six times because I wasn't satisfied with the original idea. After I got that part settled I still wasn't happy with how the third and last panel turned out. Of course, by then it was 2 am, a couple of hours before deadline and I was still drawing every thing.

I've never yet explored the extent of the relationship between these two brothers basically because the back stories have never been as clear as they were back then. Originally the role of Ben Sr. was a protector (he was a big bully in school back then) of his younger brother, Henry which the latter resented because he wasn't able to stress his identity away from his older brother's shadow. That changed with the appearance of the eldest brother whom Henry resents because the two older brothers constantly picked on him, with the eldest, Joseph, masterminding the pranks.
