Happy(?) New Year

Another year over. Can't say I felt the need to celebrate its passing as I holed up in a hotel in Ortigas to get away from the mindless celebrations like neighborhood videoke and loud upbeat music starting in the morning till, well, the early the next morning. The view from the room where I was holed up, while not totally impressive, I can see much of the area of San Juan celebrating the same way: with fireworks every few blocks or so. I guess up close the view of those fireworks really is a sight to behold but if you see the same things being played over and over and over again everywhere at the same time, it's solicits a kind of meh reaction from me.

Earlier tonight while I was going back over the memories of those I've seen outside the window and analyzing my thoughts over the matter the one thing that kept playing in my mind was, am I getting too old too fast for this? Ten years ago I took pride over the fact that I never looked my age and I was constantly aware of the fact that the best years of my life were slipping away. I lived in the past trying to hold on to whatever vestiges of it were remaining. But that was before a whole gaggle of disappointments came and destroyed my rosy view. Plus, being aware that each year seems to suck more and more (of course that's a matter of opinion but I'm basing this on my experience and what I know from everything I read and heard) things will never be the same and it's a bad thing. Society is shrinking thanks to social networking but at the same time these same members of society are becoming more cynical and pessimistic even if they try to deny it and look at every new year as something that brings a new beginning. I mean, realy? Then when calamity hits them they'd start crying and whining like babies because they never prepared for any of it since the start. It's the same cycle as every New Year's resolution. People get excited over the smallest things promising themselves they would stick to a set of list they prepared at the last minute only to forget about it after a week or so.

Am I cynical? There's no question about it. But I also know that most people are too even if they say they're not. How else can you explain the amount of celebration over the most mundane of things? Like monthsaries. Please. Don't get me started on the apparent hunger for any type of news people can "scoop" just so they can drumbeat about it on the walls of their or other people's Facebook pages. I can live with one or two posts like it but have a lot of people doing the same thing every minute or so and you have a new kind of pollution to deal with. People "liking" stuff for no viable reason other than what is known only to themselves is also another thing that gets to me but I'm working on it.

So what should we look forward to this new year? Realistically we can hope for the best but still expect things to go worse than before. Other than that, personally, I got my own outlook to deal with, old friendships to rekindle, new people to hang out with and old good habits I left at the side of the road before to pick up again. Other than that, well, like other folks, I'll take things one day at a time

Got to watch the advanced screening of The Dictator earlier this evening thanks to a friend. This is my first time to watch a full length Sacha Baron Cohen movie since I missed Borat and Bruno, though I'm familiar with the controversies that accompanied the previous films. As is my usual practice with watching any movie these days I left all expectations at the door so as not to prejudge anything and to let the movie carry its own weight (barring a rather predictable movie trailer and that incident on the red carpet with Ryan Seacrest months ago). What I saw in the movie though didn't prepare me as to how low Mr. Cohen would go to top his previous movies.

New laugh-out-loud strip from my friend, Andrei, which I discovered while browsing through his blog. Belatedly.

Do any of you remember that animated segment in Sesame Street where a small girl holding a balloon narrates her daydreams with, "What would happen if...?"

Now imagine what would happen if Adobe Photoshop came in a box and you'd have to set up everything manually?

Yeah. It looks crappy but what if the package comes with an undo button too?

Mail came and a group of us were tasked to produce some original cartoons for the upcoming magazine with a theme revolving around food. On doing my research, to prop the "mad sk33lz," I came upon these. Hope ya like 'em:

Chicken Soup

Moments before a famous Shakespearean actor was to perform Hamlet to a packed house in New York, he dropped dead. The house manager solemnly went onstage and announced, "We are sorry to bring you this news, but our performance tonight has been canceled due to the untimely demise of our featured performer."

From the back of the theater a voice cried out, "Give him some chicken soup!"

Startled, the stage manager cleared his throat and replied, "I apologize if in my grief I have not made my solemn message clear. The man is deceased."

Once again, but more emphatically the voice rang out, "Give him some chicken soup!"

Having had about enough, the manager bellowed back, "Sir, the man is dead. Giving him chicken soup couldn't possibly help."

To which the voice replied, "It couldn't hurt!"

Jello

Driver: "Hi, is your name Jello?"
Hitchhiker: "Uh... no..."
Driver: "Too bad... 'cause there's always room for Jello!"

Ginger

I've got a crocodile named Ginger."
"Does Ginger bite?"
"No, but ginger snaps"

My favorite FOXNews commentator, Bill O'Reilly, appears on The View to promote his new book, "Bold, Fresh Piece of Humanity." Even if you disagree with him you'll find this interview with the gals real entertaining as he turned on his charm easily turning the tables on those liberals (watch how Joy Behar reacts throughout this interview). He was, as one comment on YouTube went, "obnoxiously good-natured." Bill rawks!

It's Olympics time again and although I'm not a big fan of these events I thought it would be great to do a high school intrams storyline for the month. I don't know if they still hold these things today (I heard one school scrapped all athletic activities during recess and lunch so their students wouldn't catch a cold inside their airconditioned rooms, and I was, like, what the heck?!) one thing's for certain: any activity that disrupts the humdrum of academic studies once in a while is certainly fun and I wish I could turn everything back to experience what it's like to be in high school again.

This is the last of the school opening series for this month and tied up with the news about the typhoon a week ago. Although it happened during the weekend, students at least had the consolation of having classes in all levels in the metro cancelled so those in charge can assess the damages and prevent further injuries from whatever debris is left around the campus. By the way, this is the unedited strip submitted to the paper and it may or may not be changed to suit my funny bones later when it's colorized later in my DA page.

I discovered this fairly new hilarious web comic, Odd-Fish, after British artist, Nobby Nobody created a guest strip for The Unfeasible Adventures of Beaver and Steve last week. This is the first comic strip I've seen anybody do in fine ballpoint pens. Wow.

By the way, the Octopus' name is Lovecraft.

The Pufferfish is Howard.

Did that get you laughing? You want more? Start clicking.

Beerkada sandwiches with a Biblical theme and it's not even Holy Week yet. Click the strips to enlarge:

This last one's creepy especially with Aling McBeal whispering those ominous words in Bryan's ear.

I am sick and tired of all these talk of corruption in the government. Of people calling the present President the most corrupt in all history. Riiiight. Like we haven't heard that one with every succeeding administration. I can't watch local news without encountering the latest updates on the same story (TV networks have this knack of scraping whatever scum remains at the bottom of the barrel be it local showbiz gossip or politics) or newspapers and tabloids screaming anarchy from the headlines.

WAKE UP!!! This is just plain quarreling among thieves, people! It's the media's job to hype the story to sell more papers or drive up their ratings. Can't we for once, again, think for ourselves on what's good for the country?! Do you think driving GMA and her advisers out of Malacanang solve everything?! Do you really think you'll be satisfied with whoever will replace her? For how long? I bet you all will be up in arms again demanding the replacement step down for not being any better than his predecessor. I do agree with Carlos Celdran with what he posted in his blog about this whole mess:
"But please don't tell me that all the politicians pursuing this issue aren't little piglets either (below). Getting little greasy slices of pork from projects like the NBN is modus operandi in ANY administration - it's no secret to us and it's no secret to the senators doing the grilling. It's been the modus operandi for decades! Where else would ANY administration get money to do things like, oh, give to senators and congressmen for their election campaigns? Senators and Congressmen don't come for free, ya know. Tip: instead of looking at the noisy ones, let's try and count who are the quiet ones in Senate and Congress. Perhaps they are quiet because they already were given their pieces of the pork. And it's only the squealing ones that are upset because they didn't get theirs. Hence, if it's all just piggies fighting piggies over pieces of pork that they just pass on to other piggies, then it's just politics in the end. Period. Philippine politics and governance is sick, that is as obvious as obvious can be. But will this Jun Lozada scandal be the catalyst for the great changes that need to be made? Ha! Great changes will be done in this society through small ways and on a person to person basis. Paradigm shifts don't happen through Senate hearings. Trust me, this "moral revolution" WILL NOT be televised." (More...)
Don't drag me into this mess by taking any side in the matter. Each of them is not better than the other. And the Catholic Church, who's supposed to guide their members to think and make decisions based on supposed Biblical principles is no better as some Bishops like Lingayen Arcbishop Oscar Cruz thinks his time is better spent making press releases for anti-government rallies instead of calling for sobriety. So did Fr. Manoling Francisco, SJ who used the pulpit in the recent La Salle mass as his soapbox for saying only Lozada told the truth as opposed to the others as guilty of lying, bribing, kidnapping, obstruction of justice, among others when the investigation wasn't yet finished. Wouldn't it better if he used the pulpit to chide the greedy parties from both sides of the party instead of implying himself to be a judge voicing God's opinion in the matter? No wonder a lot of Filipino Catholics turn away disillusioned with their faith.

Sobriety, people. Don't let opinions sway your decisions, most especially those coming from the local news media.
